However, King Ecbert believes he has found an ally in King Aelle of Northumbria. Ecbert promises him relics from Rome and other treasures in return for his allegiance. However, Aelle is not convinced that Rome cannot help him defeat his enemies. He asks Ecbert to send him two missionaries, Brother Aiden and Brother Beadan. Brother Aiden's first task is to become acquainted with the Northumbrian people and culture, but he quickly becomes an outcast among the Northumbrians. When King Ecbert agrees to teach them about his religion, it begins a tentative relationship between the two rulers that will change their lives forever .
